With the rapid expansion of solar energy installations worldwide, the demand for high-quality photovoltaic (PV) wires and cables has surged. Solar cables play a critical role in connecting solar panels, ensuring efficient energy transmission, and maintaining long-term system reliability. However, despite their increasing popularity, many businesses and installers still misunderstand the unique characteristics of photovoltaic cables and their role in solar power systems.
Photovoltaic cables are specifically designed for interconnections in solar PV systems. Unlike traditional wiring, PV cables are engineered to endure extreme environmental conditions. They are flexible, moisture-resistant, UV-resistant, and flame-retardant. These properties allow them to perform reliably even under high temperatures. Designed for the lifespan of a solar panel, typically 25 to 30 years, PV cables often come with manufacturer warranties covering this entire period. Available in various voltage ratings and with either copper or aluminum conductors, PV cables are tailored to meet the evolving needs of the solar industry.
Many people assume that any standard DC cable can be used in solar panels. This is not the case. Ordinary DC cables are usually insulated with PVC, which cannot withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight, extreme weather, or high temperatures. Additionally, these cables generally last only five to eight years, even with proper maintenance—far shorter than the intended lifespan of solar panels. To ensure safety and durability, the National Electrical Code (NEC) strictly prohibits using generic cables in photovoltaic installations. The two acceptable options for outdoor solar wiring are PV wires and USE-2 cables.
While PV cables are the preferred choice for solar panels, USE-2 (Underground Service Entrance) cables are also permitted under NEC Article 690, which covers photovoltaic system wiring. Historically, USE-2 cables were used in solar systems before the introduction of PV wires in the 2008 NEC edition. Both cable types are approved for outdoor use, but their specifications and applications differ significantly.
Purpose and Design: PV wires are designed exclusively for interconnecting photovoltaic modules, while USE-2 cables serve broader purposes, including underground service, utility wiring, and general electrical applications.
Voltage Ratings: USE-2 cables typically have a 600 V rating. PV cables, on the other hand, are available in multiple ratings, including 600 V, 1000 V, and even 2000 V for high-voltage solar systems.
Temperature Resistance: USE-2 is rated for 90°C in both wet and dry conditions. PV wires may be rated up to 150°C, making them more suitable for solar installations exposed to extreme heat.
Flexibility: PV cables are always flexible due to stranded conductors, while not all USE-2 cables meet the same flexibility standards. Flexible USE-2 cables should be chosen if flexibility is needed for your project.
System Grounding: USE-2 cannot be used in ungrounded PV arrays. Only PV wires can safely serve in ungrounded systems.
Cable Sizes: PV wires are available in smaller gauges, while USE-2 typically starts at 14 AWG. This can limit their use in smaller or more precise installations.
Durability: USE-2 offers better crush resistance, whereas PV wires excel in flame resistance, often passing the VW-1 flame test required for solar cables.
Despite their differences, PV and USE-2 cables share several characteristics. Both types are resistant to sunlight, moisture, and high temperatures, though PV wires usually offer superior protection. They both commonly use XLPE insulation, and in some cases, EPR/CPE insulation is available. Both PV and USE-2 cables can be directly buried in compliance with NEC standards, although checking manufacturer specifications is recommended for specific products. Finally, both meet UL 4703 standards for photovoltaic wiring.
Selecting the correct cable requires careful consideration of your project’s unique requirements. Factors to consider include:
Voltage Requirements: Determine if your system needs standard 600 V cables or high-voltage options up to 2000 V.
Temperature Tolerance: Assess the environmental conditions of your installation site.
Grounding Type: Decide whether your system is grounded or ungrounded, as USE-2 cables cannot be used for ungrounded arrays.
Flexibility Needs: Consider if the cable will be bent or maneuvered around tight spaces.
Durability and Safety: Evaluate flame resistance, UV protection, and long-term reliability for your investment.
Photovoltaic cables are not just wires—they are critical components that ensure the long-term performance and safety of solar energy systems. While USE-2 cables are an alternative under certain conditions, PV wires are specifically engineered for solar installations, offering superior durability, temperature resistance, and flexibility. By understanding the differences, similarities, and technical requirements of these cables, businesses and installers can make informed choices, ultimately ensuring the efficiency, safety, and longevity of their solar power systems.
